“Idea Campaign” Seeks to Fill Growing Demand for Pediatric Medical Device Development

February 25, 2010

The Pediatric Medical Device fellowship team of the Ewing Marion Kauffman and Lucile Packard Foundations has announced the launch of an online “idea campaign” aimed at fostering new ideas in the development of pediatric medical devices.  According to the Kauffman Foundation, the medical device market for children has a higher demand than supply, due to a number of barriers.  To maneuver around these hurdles, the eight-week idea campaign will bring people together in a forum that encourages them to contribute and share their ideas freely.  “By leveraging people’s collective passion, genius and creativity we can hope to achieve something worthwhile,” says Kevin Chao, MD and surgical resident on the fellowship team.  “The goal is to harness the creativity and collaboration of groups of people, and to shorten the time it takes to get solutions to market.”

Visitors are encouraged to access the idea campaign, contributing their ideas and comments, and ultimately voting on the most promising ideas.  Campaign organizers believe that the sparks for ideas often come from unexpected people such as family doctors, operating room nurses or pediatric patients’ families.  The campaign will continue through April 21.
