As one of the key goals outlined in its third annual Corporate Sustainability Report, AEP has committed to doubling, from 1,000 MW to 2,000 MW, the amount of renewable energy it will output by 2011.
“We can support development of a lower-carbon energy future through a combination of increasing renewable energy, driving the development of a new, interstate extra-high voltage transmission system to bring that renewable energy to market, promoting energy efficiency and further developing advanced coal technologies such as carbon capture and storage,” said Michael G. Morris, AEP chairman, president and CEO.
The sustainability report was developed under the guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), a voluntary framework used to measure the performance of organizations worldwide in terms of their economic, environmental and social performance.
AEP’s Sustainability Report covers 12 goals that are seen as key to the company’s long-term sustainability including climate change, environmental performance, public policy, energy security, workforce development and other key business factors. A number of initiatives called for in the report include efforts to reduce and offset greenhouse gas emissions through carbon capture and storage, making power plants more efficient, incorporating more flex-fuel and hybrid vehicles into the AEP fleet and installing 70-kilowatt solar systems at two facilities.
