February 20, 2009

New Interim Director Comes Onboard as Announcement is made that Ohio Exports are Up 7% for 2008

In response to the resignation of Lt. Governor Lee Fisher as director of the Ohio Department of Development (Fisher plans to run for the U.S. Senate), Governor Ted Strickland has announced the appointment of Mark Barbash as interim director. Barbash has been most recently serving as the chief economic development officer for the ODOD. In this position he supervised projects relating to technology, global affairs, community development, travel and tourism urban affairs and served as the chief architect of the state’s economic development strategy for the Strickland administration. Prior to that, he served as director of the Department of Development for the City of Columbus form 2000-2007.

Barbash takes this office as more good news is issued by the ODOD. For the 10th straight year, Ohio exports grew in 2008. The state’s exports grew by nearly 7 percent over 2007. The U.S. Department of Commerce International Trade Administration ranked Ohio as the 7th largest exporting state in the nation and the only state to consecutively increase exports every year since 1998.

The ODOD’s Global Markets Division helps Ohio companies explore trade opportunities and expand business through a network of international offices located in Asia, Australia, the Eastern Mediterranean, Europe, India, North and South America and Southern Africa.
