Battelle’s Rosen Appointed to National Governors Association STEM Committee

November 23, 2010

Rich Rosen, Battelle’s Vice President of Education and Philanthropy, has been appointed to the National Governors Association (NGA) Center for Best Practices Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Advisory Committee. The 19-person committee, filled with leading education experts from around the United States, is tasked with helping the nation’s governors develop comprehensive STEM agendas in their states.

Rosen has expertise in the field as Battelle’s lead on education initiatives. He helped found Metro Early College High School (Metro) in Columbus, which became the model STEM high school upon which others around the state are based. Rosen also is the executive director of the Ohio STEM Learning Network (OSLN). The OSLN built upon the design principles of Metro to connect a network of 10 STEM schools in Ohio. Several states across the nation – including New York, North Carolina and Tennessee that were awarded national Race to the Top grants – are adopting the STEM network model to enhance local education reform efforts.

As a member of the committee, Rosen will work with the NGA to offer expertise to governors while they construct a state-level policy framework for the newly expanded STEM agenda. Advisory Committee members will serve two-year terms and advise on subjects such as education, policy, business and STEM content areas.

“As STEM education continues to gain momentum in America, having a committee like this one is integral to ensure the right policy levers are in place to prepare students for success,” said Rosen. “For our nation to compete, we must have meaningful and project-based STEM education initiatives in our classrooms that make the connection for students between the classroom and real-life experiences. I’m confident this committee will bring new insight to the national STEM discussion.”

The committee will guide the expansion of the NGA Center STEM agenda to include both K-12 and higher education; provide a series of recommendations for building and advancing comprehensive STEM education agendas; and support the development of a national STEM meeting that the NGA Center will host in fall 2011.
