The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded Battelle a $13 million, five-year contract for the continued evaluation of the performance of homeland security technologies in relation to water protection and wide-area decontamination.
The EPA has been designated the lead federal agency for the remediation of areas contaminated by terrorist events involving the release of biological, chemical and radiological materials and other toxins. Battelle began working with the EPA on these issues under a preceding contract in 1997. .
Under the contract, Battelle will test, evaluate and report on the performance of various technologies including decontamination/surface cleaning of wide areas, decontamination of drinking water distribution systems and wastewater treatment plants, water quality monitoring and detection, air cleaning methodologies for use inside structures and personal protective equipment.
In a related story, Michael Smith, a member of the Battelle Cyber Security Practice was named the 2009 Department of Homeland Security Science & Technology Information System Security Officer (ISSO) of the Year.
Cyber security is a top priority for Battelle. “We are especially proud of Michael,” said Brian Schultz, Battelle’s senior director of the Cyber Security Practice. “He has played an instrumental role in the recent success of the S&T Office of the Chief Information Officer. In his function at Battelle, Michael has been an exemplary model ISSO for our personnel and has been willing to provide his support and service to those in need to ensure the S&T mission does not waiver.”
The award was presented by Sean Lang, chief information security officer (CISO) of the Science and Technology Directorate at the Department of Homeland Security.
