BioOhio Publishes Ohio Bioscience Growth Report

March 31, 2011

BioOhio’s recently released annual report on the growth of the state’s bioscience sector indicates the past decade has been one of strong growth for the industry.  Since 2000, Ohio bioscience employers have added 10,222 jobs, representing a 19.5 percent increase in bioscience employment, as contrasted with an 8.6 percent decline in the state’s total employment figures.  In all, Ohio’s bioscience industry directly employs more than 62,500 workers.

Central Ohio accounts for nearly a quarter of the state’s bioscience employment with the largest subsector being in research and development.  Almost 42 percent of all R&D employment within the state is located in Central Ohio, attributable in large part to Battelle.

Central Ohio is also rapidly developing as a center for bioscience activity.  Although Northeast Ohio leads the state in the number of bioscience locations, since 2000, Central Ohio has shown the fastest growth rate (4.3 percent) in the number of bioscience locations operating in the region.

“Ohio’s bioscience ecosystem is healthier than ever and resources are constantly being added or enhanced,” says Tony Denis, president and CEO of BioOhio.

Bioscience in Ohio also showed growth in payroll and wages. The average wage for bioscience industry employees in 2009 ($68,384) was 67 percent higher than the average wage for all industries in Ohio ($41,052).
