Cardinal Health has become a distributor of an innovative RF Surgical Detection System to hospitals, surgery centers and other health care providers in the U.S.
The patented, FDA-approved system uses radio frequencies (RF) to scan for and sound an alert if any RF-tagged sponges, gauze or towels remain in a patient prior to surgical closing.
Studies indicate that one in every 1,000 to 1,500 intra-abdominal surgeries results in a retained sponge incident which can lead to severe complications including death.
Cardinal Health already has a comprehensive offering of retained foreign object solutions including computer-assisted sponge counting and documentation systems and RFID-enabled sponge counting and detection systems.
“This agreement with RF Surgical now provides Cardinal Health the opportunity to support our customers’ diverse patient safety needs, regardless of the retained foreign object technology they may decide to utilize,” says Steve Inacker, president of Cardinal Health’s Medical segment.
