CardiOx Corp, a Central Ohio startup developing a noninvasive way to detect right-to-left heart shunts (often commonly referred to as “a hole in the heart”), is targeting the end of 2011 for regulatory clearance in the European and US markets.
CardiOx is also seeking to raise $3.5 million in series C funding to support its efforts to commercialize its patented technology. The CardiOx diagnostic system combines an injection of dye into a patient’s heart with sensors on the ear to determine the presence of a shunt. The device also can be used to verify that surgery succeeded in patching the hole. Right-to-left shunts are predicted to be present within approximately 20 percent of the population and in some people they can lead to strokes, heart attacks and migraine headaches.
