Robert Massie, president of Chemical Abstract Services (CAS), was honored with the 2011 International Patent Information Award. The announcement was made during the International Patent Information Conference and Exposition held in Seville, Spain earlier this year.
Massie was recognized for his leadership at CAS, which he assumed in 1992. Before that time, processing of chemical patents had significant delays. Under Massie’s direction, the CAS team completely re-engineered the document handling process introducing such important innovations as SciFinder which provides chemists with easy and direct desktop access to patents and literature.
In the early 1990s, chemists, biologists and other technologists were struggling to keep up with all the advances in the sciences. They needed the best resources for finding and filtering technical information. Massie recognized the need for making the enormous wealth of data contained in complex database systems more directly accessible at scientists’ workbenches.
Massie was awarded the International Patent Information Award 2011 for his significant achievements towards the advancement of patent information.
