Central Ohio startup, Healthspot, is combining telemedicine with virtual-doctors-office kiosks to create an “ATM” approach to healthcare for common ailments such as colds, allergies and other minor illnesses. Healthspot is seen as an alternative to retail medical clinics which are becoming prevalent in pharmacies and grocery stores.
Patients would enter the Healthspot kiosk for a private, virtual doctor’s appointment via teleconferencing. Each kiosk would be equipped with high-definition videoconferencing capabilities, plus integrated digital medical equipment that can transmit diagnostic information such as temperature and blood pressure.
Unlike retail clinics, no medical staff are required on-site. An attendant would be on hand for technical help and to clean the kiosk.
The company plans to roll out kiosks first quarter 2012 and has announced a marketing partnership with a Columbus-area contractor aimed at landing HealthSpot’s kiosks in military facilities and other U.S. government groups in remote locations.
HealthSpot has thus far pulled in about $6 million in equity from private and institutional investors.
