PercuVision, a Columbus-based developer of a medical device to visually guide medical staff through insertion of a urethral catheter has received clearance to go to market from the Food & Drug Administration. PercuVision’s DirectVision System is a catheter equipped with a fiber-optic flashlight and camera that allows nurses to virtually see the catheter’s path and thus increase the chance of completing insertion more smoothly and quickly. The device not only cuts down on patient discomfort, but also helps avoid injuries incurred during blind insertions. It is further expected to cut health care costs by eliminating costly procedures associated with catheter-related injuries.
The device will sell for $29,000 and will be available soon for sale in Ohio and neighboring states. In preparation for FDA approval, PercuVision raised $2.9 million and is continuing to raise capital. The company anticipates a doubling of its eight-person workforce.
