China is sitting on over $3 trillion in foreign currency reserves and is encouraging its high-income citizens to diversify their holdings and invest in projects around the world. Unfortunately, the U.S. is only the fourth largest destination for this capital flow --- trailing behind the African continent, South America, and Europe. By not welcoming and proactively recruiting Chinese investment into the U.S., American businesses and cities often fail to access this investment capital.
One of the most underutilized strategies in attracting foreign direct investment, from China and elswhere, is to appeal to those foreign investors who seek to invest in the U.S., in large part, because they wish to aquire the coveted U.S. Green Card so that she and her family can access advanced education, healthcare, stable markets, and the best place in the world to launch a business.
Richard Herman, an attorney and noted author, is one of the architects of a national movement to leverage immigration programs, policies, and immigrant networks to attract foreign direct investment. Mr. Herman will discuss how Midwest businesses and cities can stand-out and develop their own pro-China strategies, partner with local Chinese-U.S. business experts, and obtain a Foreign Investor Regional Center license from U.S. Department of Homeland Security (EB-5 Green Card Investor Program) or partner with those who have a license. This discussion, while emphasizing the opportunities in attracting Chinese investment, is applicable to attracting investment from around the world.
