Gail Besner, MD, principal investigator in the Center for Perinatal Research at the Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s has been awarded a 4-year RO1 grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to continue her work which focuses on treating and preventing various forms of intestinal injury in infants. Dr. Besner’s work includes research into neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), which is the most common and most serious gastrointestinal disorder among hospitalized preterm infants. NEC is the leading cause of surgical death in these infants.
