In a study conducted for, and published by Business Week, Dublin has been named the best small city (population between 20,000 and 200,000) in the U.S. for starting a new business. The study was conducted by GIS Planning which based its findings on 11 factors for gauging an area’s entrepreneurial climate including: number of workers with at least a bachelor's degree; white-collar workers; "young and educated" population; workers in "creative" professions; international talent; universities; patents; venture capital funding; small businesses per capita; sole proprietors per capita ; and startups per capita.
According to FoxBusiness.com, Dublin was selected as the #1 small city for startups for a number of reasons including its proximity to OSU and the talent pool that comes out of the university; in addition its newer infrastructure and Wifi connectivity make the city particularly desirable for high-tech startups. The study found Dublin to have 2.4 startups per capita.
“It [Dublin] draws the highly skilled and educated people you need to bring in, especially to a high-tech startup company,” says Phil Eggers, founder of Dublin-based medical device startup, Cardiox. Eggers has founded five previous startups which eventually were relocated to either the Bay Area or Boston. This time though he plans to keep Cardiox in Dublin.
Four other small cities round out the top five list including Overland Park, KS, Hoboken, NJ, Lafayette, LA, and Irvine, CA.
