POSITION DESCRIPTION This job requires a results-oriented individual with experience in the design, documentation, development, and testing of embedded control solutions. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong programming skills that emphasize efficient, well structured code and will have a BS (EE/CS) degree or equivalent work experience. Experience with real-time control solutions, excellent organization and communication skills, and a record of achievement in development with embedded controllers and application software. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS * Design, develop, test and document embedded control and PC Application software systems for Fire, EMS, Bus, Military, and Lighting markets. . * Works with project sponsors to identify software requirements with regards to functionality, schedule, and performance. * Drives the development of detailed technical design specifications from vague or incomplete product concepts. * Works with company reliability and quality groups to ensure robust product design and release. * Assists field service groups with quick identification of product failure modes and countermeasures. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS * Bachelor degree in EE/CS with 5+ years of experience. * Strong Embedded Background with motor control, distributed systems or Human Machine Interfaces. * Proficient in C and can understand assembly language constructs for various processors. * Knowledge in C++, C#, VB6, VB.NET or Object Oriented Programming desired. * Demonstrated ability to read electrical schematics and participate in electrical design reviews. * Embedded RTOS or Embedded Linux experience a plus. * Development experience in an automotive related background preferred. KEY CHALLENGES * Coordinate and communicate effectively with multiple engineering disciplines (electronic, software, mechanical, manufacturing, and process) * Balancing aggressive project delivery demands with limited internal resources. * Maintaining design schedules. * Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently. * Results oriented & team oriented with a strong desire for hands-on work. * Must have excellent verbal & written communication skills. POSITION DIMENSIONS * Reports to Columbus Software Team Manger * Works with geographically separated engineering teams for collaborative product development * Works closely with product reliability, manufacturing, and quality groups to ensure successful product launches. * Has shared responsibility for the cost, schedule, and performance of products being developed. ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Assumes additional responsibilities and performs special projects as needed or directed PHYSICAL DEMANDS Nature of work requires an ability to effectively communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents operating standard business office equipment. Majority of time spent concentrating on a computer screen coding, debugging and testing developed programs. WORKING CONDITIONS Work performed in an open environment. Requires ability to maintain focus while dealing with distractions, noise and interruptions. Requires availability for extended hours during peak periods.
