Engineer III R&D for Sensors Product Group Located in Westerville, OH (just north of Columbus), Lake Shore Cryotronics, Inc. is a global leader in the design and manufacture of:
-
high performance tools for the measurement of cryogenic temperatures
-
magnetic measurements and characterization, and
-
tools to characterize electrical properties of materials
Our modern facility employs approximately 130 employees, consisting of scientists, engineers, administrative and production personnel. We are a family-owned, privately held company, in business since 1968. The Engineer III will perform activities concerned with design, testing, and manufacture of products and the development of applications of products for industrial and scientific uses. They will have an opportunity to make original contributions to Lake Shore’s strategy and product portfolio.
The primary tasks and projects the Engineer III will work on include:

Anodic etching of semiconductors
-
Electroplating
-
Transport measurements of thin films
-
Optical measurements of thin films
-
Deposition and materials analysis of thin films
-
Composition, morphology
-
Synthesis of catalysts
-
May coordinate or supervise activities of engineers and technicians Additional tasks include:
-
building new materials platforms, one for fiber optic/optical sensors and instruments, one for metal oxide and other
-
Lab work (synthesis/analysis)
-
Management work
-
Patent/proposal writing and tracking
-
Sometimes equipment maintenance
-
Tool design and installation
-
Probably more than one objective at once—project management skills
-
Some travel to supplier sites, trade shows, seminars, and customer sites.
The successful candidate will have the following attributes:
-
Be oriented toward product development and commercialization.
-
Be a hands-on engineer as well as have project and/or people management experience and skills (good communicator) Prefer but not required:
-
Be familiar with vacuum, plasma and vacuum coating systems and their troubleshooting and maintenance.
-
Have materials and device development experience with thin films and semiconductors.
-
Have knowledge of and experience with materials analysis tools such as Auget, XPS and XRD, SEMs and atomic force microscopes.

Be analytical
-
Be willing and able to write grant and contract proposals, administer the grants and write reports.

Be both a team contributor and able to share and defend their own ideas
-
Be eager to educate self on new topics Experience/Knowledge Base: minimum 5 years
-
Materials analysis, especially thin films
-
XPS (also known as EDS), RBS, XRD, etc. and interpretation of results
-
Vacuum coating processes/ vacuum technology
-
Wet chemistry/analysis and synthesis
-
Atomic force and magnetic force microscopy
-
ICP liquid compositional analysis Education:
-
MS or PhD in Chemistry and/or Materials Science
-
Metal Oxide/Organo-Metallic Chemistry Catalysis
