Issue 1 Passes Resoundingly – Renews Ohio Third Frontier for Four More Years
The voters of Ohio voted resoundingly (62 percent) in favor of State Issue 1. Employment in Biosciences & High Tech Remains Strong
Two independent reports out this week indicate that employment in Ohio within key sectors continued to grow through 2008 (the most recent year for which data is available). The annual Cyberstates report on high tech trends ranked Ohio 8th in terms of the number of high tech jobs added between 2007 and 2008 and 14th nationally for the total high tech workers in the state. For the fourth consecutive year, Cyberstates reported growth within Ohio’s high tech industry. The state added a net 4,100 jobs in 2008.

i6 Challenge to Encourage Innovation and Entrepreneurship -- $12M in Funding Available
The U.S. Department of Commerce's Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Economic Development Administration (EDA) has announced a new $12 million innovation competition, in partnership with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). Nationwide Children’s Breaks Ground on 225,000-Square-Foot Research Building
Construction has begun on Research Building III at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Turner Construction broke ground this week on the $93 million, 225,000-square-foot project. The building will anchor the west campus expansion of Nationwide Children’s and house the Battelle Center for Mathematical Medicine, the Center for Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Research and the Center for Perinatal Research. National Bioscience Report Shows Some Growth
The U.S. bioscience industry continued to score employment gains through 2008 – the first year of the recent economic downturn, according to a study released today by Battelle and the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO). The Battelle/BIO State Bioscience Initiatives 2010 contains the most recent data available and shows that publicly traded bioscience-related companies on the whole generated positive net growth through 2009. U.S. employment in the bioscience sector reached 1.42 million in 2008, a gain of 19,000 bioscience industry jobs in the United States since 2007. [Read More]
Battelle Wins $7.9 Million Contract to Provide Decontamination Technology Support for the U.S. Army
Columbus, OH – Battelle will provide laboratory testing, engineering services and field testing of hazardous materials decontamination technologies under a new $7.9 million contract for a program called HaMMER (Hazard Mitigation, Material and Equipment Restoration.) Battelle is one 10 contractors designated to bid on providing support for specific military and homeland security research contracts at Edgewood with a total value of about $485 million.
