Facebook Founder Launches Social Network Focused on Charities

December 3, 2010

Chris Hughes, one of the founders of Facebook, is applying his digital expertise to a new venture called Jumo, which aims to connect people with nonprofits and charitable organizations. The site, unveiled on Tuesday, is dedicated to helping people find and evaluate charities.

Charities will each have their own dedicated pages on Jumo with the ability to link to relevant news articles, Twitter posts and YouTube videos. In addition, users can add their own feedback and comments about the cause. Jumo hopes to do for charities what Yelp did for restaurants by allowing people to weigh in on the merits of the charity, their experiences, etc.

Hughes, who also served as the chief digital organizer for the Barak Obama presidential campaign, says the idea with Jumo is to take the principles that helped organize a network of volunteers into a successful political force and apply them to a much broader universe of causes and issues
