Governor Signs Into Law JobsOhio Legislation

February 25, 2011

Friday, Governor Kasich signed into law House Bill 1, that creates JohsOhio, a public-private approach to business creation and retention in the state.  The legislation fundamentally changes the Ohio Department of Development structure by replacing the agency with a non-profit corporation with a governing board, led by the Governor, and comprising appointed business leaders.  The governing board will use both public funds and privately raised dollars to attract companies and jobs to Ohio.  One of the primary goals will be to make the organization self-sustaining.  The bill passed the Ohio Senate by a 31-2 vote and the House by a 60-35 vote following changes made to address concerns of ethics and public transparency.

A six-month transition is planned to move from the current Department of Development to the new JobsOhio structure.
