Israeli Firms Finding Warm Welcome in Ohio

April 29, 2010

The tiny nation of Israel is a giant in the startup world.  It has the highest number of startups per capita of anywhere else on the globe and it has more companies on the NASDAQ exchange than the entire continent of Europe.  But Israel’s dependence on foreign markets to create growth for these companies means international partnerships are essential for success.

Ohio has consistently and aggressively pursued such partnerships and the result is that the state is seeing increased investments from Israeli businesses.

In Central Ohio, Sensible Medical is one Israeli company that has recently established operations in Columbus to develop monitoring technology that could help prevent hospitalizations for congestive heart failure patients.  The company is consulting with William Abraham, MD, professor of internal medicine, director of The Ohio State University's Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and a leader in cardiovascular disease research.  The solution presented by Sensible Medical is something Abraham says he’s been researching for years.

"These hospitalizations are a huge burden for both the patients and the system," he says. "This tool can help keep them out of the hospital."

Abraham is working with Sensible Medical on conducting its major clinical trials at Ohio State and other Ohio hospitals in Cleveland and Cincinnati.

"A business like this raises the state's profile in biotech, which has traditionally been clustered on the coasts," says Abraham.   “The other plus is the creation of new jobs. Eventually there could be a need for hundreds of employees."
