Description

The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital has experienced a tremendous amount of growth in its research activities over the past several years. This has created an opportunity for a Licensing Associate position in the Office of Technology Commercialization. The person in this position will have the opportunity to help shape and grow the commercialization activities at The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital. Overall, this position will work with the Director to protect and commercialize new technologies coming out of Nationwide Children's Hospital.

Job Responsibilities

  • Review and negotiate material transfer agreements. Applies working knowledge of contract law.
  • Review and negotiate confidential disclosure agreements for technologies developed at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
  • Review intellectual property language in other legal documents.
  • Review license agreements and monitor post-transactional license compliance.
  • Contact, advise and educate NCH inventors regarding material transfer agreements, confidential disclosure agreements and the commercialization of research and technology.
  • Assist to solicit, evaluate and manage novel technologies for their commercialization potential, executing confidentiality agreements and taking other precautions so as to work within specific US and foreign patent policies. Exercises high levels of confidentiality.
  • Assist to market technologies to identify potential licensees, developing and implementing specific strategies for each technology;
  • preparing non-confidential technical summaries, seeking out appropriate industry contacts, calling and meeting with potential partners, presenting at conferences, etc.
  • Translates scientific language and summarizes complex methods into terms appropriate for business negotiation
  • Helps in negotiations for licensing/option agreements and other related contracts.
  • Drafts and negotiates exclusive and non-exclusive license/option agreements and other types of technology-driven agreements, working with Director, Legal Services and outside legal counsel, as appropriate.
  • Builds and maintains a network of local, regional, national and international business partners. Exercises excellent verbal, written, presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Other duties as assigned to develop technology commercialization at Nationwide Children's Hospital.
     

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Master's degree or higher in life science, paralegal studies or business is preferred; Additional experience may be used on a one-to-one basis to offset the educational requirements.
  • 1-2 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and work experience;
  • Work experience in contract review, specifically material transfer agreements, interinstitutional agreements and non-disclosure agreements is highly desired.
  • A broad understanding of legal contracts and a technical background in science is preferred.
  • Previous technology transfer or contract review experience;
  • Understanding of the Bayh-Dole Act, copyright/patent law and NIH’s policy on research tools;
  • Ability to evaluate new technologies and work with faculty and staff to develop a commercialization pathway.
  • Excellent communication, and presentation skills; demonstrated technical, writing and computer skills; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with prospects, outside agencies, visitors, and members of Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital faculty, staff, and administration;
  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills;
  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills; Independent self-starter with strong work ethic;
  • Team player; Excellent attention to details, follow-through & closing.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office suite for word processing, email spreadsheets etc.
