2010 was a very good year for Central Ohio startup Manta. The online database of information on small- and medium-sized businesses (SMB) was recently named by the Business Insider to its Silicon Valley Insider Digital 100 list of the world’s most valuable startups -- a list that includes such digital industry standouts as Facebook, Zynga and Skype (among others).
This distinction follows both the company’s ranking as the third largest business news/research Web site in the world by comScore and a year of unprecedented growth.
In 2010, Manta’s worldwide audience grew from 12 million visitors a month to 26 million and company revenue increased by more than 75 percent. Ad placements were up and leading brands including American Express, AT&T, Verizon, Marriott, Xerox and United Healthcare were just a few of the advertisers who targeted SMB decision makers through Manta.
But these achievements were only complementary to what Manta President and CEO Pamela Springer says is the most significant metric of all – an increase by 250 percent in the number of SMB owners who joined Manta’s online community by adding their profiles to the database. Daily company profile claims went from 200 per day in December 2009 to more than 1,000 per day in December 2010. Manta now has more than 1 million registered users and nearly 64 million company profiles included in its database.
“We have emerged as a leader in a space that is primed to experience sustained rapid growth because of innovative technologies, but as well because the small and midsize businesses of the world are what sustain our economy,” said Springer.
Manta added more than 20 employees in 2010 and expects to add 25 new team members in the coming year to further support the company’s expansion throughout the U.S. and internationally. And the company will increase its office capacity by 50% at its corporate headquarters in Columbus.
