The community got an advance look this week of how the expanded downtown campus and main hospital of Nationwide Children’s will look when it opens in June 2012. At a press conference this week Chair of the Board, Abigail Wexner, and CEO Steve Allen, MD, unveiled concepts for the new hospital interiors, outdoor green space and other features including a Magic Forrest, Animal Friends and a six-acre park.
Wexner also presented a new identity for the children’s hospital which incorporates four butterflies indigenous to Ohio and a new tagline: “When your child needs a hospital everything matters.” Missing from the new identity is the word Hospital, which remains part of the institutional name, but not the corporate identity.
Although these are only outward signs, they are symbolic of what is underway during this major renovation and expansion. “This has truly been an incredible and inspiring journey,” said Wexner. “A journey we embarked upon not only to fulfill a demand for patient care services and research, but also to fulfill our fundamental promise to our children, families and community – that no child should ever have to leave Central Ohio to receive the absolute finest care available.”
The project is reported to be on schedule and budget for the June 2012 opening of the main hospital.
