January 15, 2010

Completing the third and final phase of an $840 million strategic facilities expansion plan which was launched in 2005, Nationwide Children’s Hospital has announced it will break ground in 2010 on what is being called the Research III building. Research III will represent a $93 million, six-floor, 225,000-square foot, world-class research facility.  Together with the Wexner Institute for Pediatric Research and the Research II building, the three facilities will comprise The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.  The Research Institute is currently ranked as a top 10 National Institutes of Health-funded, free-standing pediatric research center.  External funding to the Institute more than doubled from $20 million in 2000 to $49.4 million in 2007 and is expected to attract $268.6 million over the next five years, making it one of the fastest growing pediatric research institutes in the U.S.

The new tower will be located on property west of Parsons Avenue and north of Livingston Avenue.  Expected completion of the facility is slated for late 2012.  Among the areas of research emphasis to be conducted in the new facility are scientific programs related to prematurity and pediatric heart disease.
