NexTech Materials of Lewis Center manufactures ceramic materials that are used primarily in solid oxide fuel cells. Fuel cells can be used to heat homes and buildings, and power military and motor vehicles. They are highly fuel efficient and this efficiency also contributes to a 50 percent reduction in greenhouse gases.
Currently NexTech offers more than 100 products and does business in 35 countries such as Korea and Japan where use of fuel cells to heat homes and power vehicles is more widespread.
While the company is awaiting similar adoption of fuel cells in the US, CEO William Dawson says the company is forging ahead with production of a number of sensors used to detect the presence of gases in the surrounding air.
NexTech was founded in 1994 and currently employs 35 people.
The company has received Ohio Third Frontier funding of $1 million for its Cell Manufacturing project. As part of this project NexTech will fabricate and validate "ultra-large" area planar solid oxide fuel cells to be incorporated into 100+ KW power generation systems. In addition, Ohio Third Frontier awarded NexTech $549,088 for its Market Readiness of Hydrogen Sensors for Advanced Energy Applications project.
hiVelocity, the Ohio Third Frontier online magazine, recently featured NexTech. For the full story see here.
