The OSU Medical Center is testing a new wireless device that may be the key to saving the lives of more than five million Americans suffering from heart failure. Researchers have implanted wireless monitoring devices into the pulmonary arteries of ten patients as part of a feasibility study and ongoing CHAMPION trial.
The device provides real-time monitoring of pulmonary artery pressure. Results are transmitted to a secure Web site where it is available for physician review. The data can also be transmitted to a handheld computer or PDA that can be accessed by the physician at any time around the clock.
The current study is designed to help determine whether the data provided is useful to physicians in identifying appropriate medical interventions.
Dr. Ayesha Hasan, of OSU’s Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital is the lead principal investigator.
