Palm Opens E-commerce Site for Smartphone Application Developers

August 20, 2009

Palm Inc., who recently introduced the Palm Pre smartphone, has announced the launch of a beta site to support e-commerce functions for developers of Palm webOS applications.  Developers selected by Palm can make their applications available for both free and paid download from the Palm App Catalog.

Palm is offering a 70-30 split – with developers receiving 70 percent of revenues generated from downloads of their apps.

Palm is launching the site in beta in order to test the experience for webOS app developers and users before opening the program to all developers later this year.  You can apply via email to have your app considered for inclusion in the catalog.  Some of the selection criteria include:

  • The usefulness and engaging quality of the app to users
  • Appealing design and user interface aligned with Palm UI guidelines
  • Apps are written for webOS and not delivered through the browser
  • Apps have acceptable performance and response capabilities; sluggish apps or those that consume excessive power on the device will be rejected.
