Registration Now Open for International EcoSummit 2012 to be Held Next Fall in Central Ohio

August 19, 2011

Columbus will become the first US city to host EcoSummit, an international ecological conference focused on the restoration and sustainability of the Earth’s ecosystems.  EcoSummit 2012 is scheduled for September 30th through October 5, 2012, and will welcome more than 2,000 of the world’s most prominent ecologists to Central Ohio.

EcoSummit 2012 will bring together such respected minds as Nobel Prize laureate Elinor Ostrom, Pulitzer Prize winners E.O. Wilson and Jared Diamond, Kyoto Prize winner Simon Levin, Stockholm Water Prize laureates Sven Jørgensen and Bill Mitsch, internationally recognized wetlands ecologist, distinguished professor and director of Ohio State’s Olentangy River Wetland Research Park.

Ecosystems, such as streams, rivers, inland and coastal wetlands, grasslands and forests, provide numerous services that fundamentally support human health and well-being. The international conference will explore innovative science-based strategies that are socially and culturally acceptable for creating, managing and restoring these ecosystems to ensure that society will continue to benefit from them.

The summit, being organized by the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission, the City of Columbus and Ohio State, will provide a high-profile platform for dialogue among researchers, planners and decision-makers to develop a better understanding of the complex nature of ecological systems and the means to protect and enhance them.

Registration is now open for EcoSummit 2012, with early bird registration rates available through April 27, 2012.

Previous summits have been held in Copenhagen (1996), Halifax, Nova Scotia (2000) and Beijing (2007).
