Report Shows Central Ohio Making Significant Strides in Biosciences Sector

April 1, 2010

BioOhio has released its annual Ohio Bioscience Growth Report indicating that employment within Ohio’s biosciences sector is on the rise across the state despite the nation’s overall employment and economic struggles.  Statewide, since 2000, biosciences have added over 8,400 jobs. Total employment in the sector in 2008 reached 55,465, a 2.8 percent increase over 2007.

Central Ohio experienced the fastest growth rate of employment (44 percent) of any other region in the state during the period 2000-2008.  In 2008, the region had 15,000 bioscience jobs – the largest subsector of which was pharmaceuticals and therapeutics.  From 2000-2008, bioscience-related payroll within the region grew 63 percent – more than twice the growth rate of the state’s bioscience sector overall.

In terms of new companies within the biosciences, Central Ohio had its best year since BioOhio began tracking this data.
