Education

A four year degree in computer science, information systems or engineering is required; or, seven (7) years of directly related experience is required.

Experience

A minimum of three (3) years of hands-on experience in network and system design, implementation, support of a high-available 24/7/365 operating environment and extensive project management experience is required.

  • MCSE, CCNA is required
  • Experience in Microsoft Active Directory / Exchange design, support, and implementation.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of Nortel 1140 VOIP system.
  • Expert knowledge of TCP/IP and routing protocols.
  • Possesses a full understanding of the ISO/OSI model.
  • Complete understanding of Layer 2 switching and Layer 3 routing concepts.
  • Broad knowledge of various devices including switches, hubs, load balancers and VPN appliances.
  • Experience with wiring and wiring management.
  • Experienced in troubleshooting using protocol analyzers.
  • Must demonstrate effective interpersonal communication skills including written and verbal skills.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret business processes and data and to independently analyze and identify comprehensive solutions to complex problems.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, MS Project and Visio; multiple vendor specific tools.
  • Broad hands-on knowledge of firewalls, intrusion detection systems, anti-virus software, data encryption, and other industry standard techniques and practices.
  • In-depth knowledge of platform operation systems including Unix and Microsoft Server.
  • Knowledge of applicable business practices relating to data privacy and protection.
  • Highly self-motivated and directed with strong organizational skills and a keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks and projects in a high-pressure environment.
  • Able to work in a team oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Ability to effectively and positively respond to challenging inquiries or complaints as necessary.
Description

American Municipal Power, Inc. is the nonprofit corporation organized in Ohio in 1971 for the purpose of owning and operating electric facilities or otherwise providing for the generation, transmission and distribution of electric power and energy to its members.

The Network Engineer is responsible for installing, configuring and maintaining AMP’s networking hardware and software including firewalls. Manages LAN/WAN security and network performance. Ensures the secure operation of systems, servers and network connections. Additionally, this person will analyze server and firewall logs, scrutinize network traffic, and resolve vulnerability issues as well as troubleshooting and conducting user/security audits when required. Will lead technical staff in the design, development, and implementation of IT systems. Track progress of projects and provides feedback to Senior Management.

  • Installs, maintains and upgrades AMP’s CISCO and other network equipment and installs and labels network cabling.
  • Responsible for Maintaining a Microsoft operating environment:
    • o Active Directory
    • o Exchange
    • o SCCM
    • o Windows XP / 7
  • Implements load balancing equipment and software.
  • Monitors and maintains LAN/WAN connectivity using network analyzers.
  • Maintains a high level of confidentiality in all duties.
  • Must adhere to a flexible schedule with varying hours; provides off-hours pager support.
  • Troubleshoots network and connectivity problems; assists in developing network solutions to provide user connectivity; creates and maintains detailed network documentation.
  • Deploys, manages, and maintains all security systems.
  • Administers and maintains firewall/external email access rights and permissions; Monitors server, firewall and intrusion detection logs as well as network traffic for unusual activity and report.
  • Performs daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.
  • Applies fixes, security patches and upgrades.
  • Provides on-call support to technical support team.
  • Researches products and vendors and makes recommendations.
  • Assists the CIO in maintaining vendor relationships.
  • Supports AMP’s VOIP Phone System (Hardware and Software.
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
