Tech Skills for the Next Decade

IT is a career path that requires constant learning and the development of new skills.  Whereas in the late 80s, NetWare and IPX/SPX administration were the skills to have, today it’s all about TCP/IP and the Internet.  TechRepublic and the eLearning service provider SkillSoft, have developed a list of skills that will be key to career advancement in IT over the next few years. Some of these include:

  • Voice over IP (VoIP) – in support of VoIP telephone services which many companies and consumers are rapidly adopting.
  • Unified Communications – to support of the convergence of different communications technologies such as e-mail, voicemail, text messaging which users are increasingly demanding.
  • Hybrid Networks – for the hybridization of various network platforms (Windows, Linux, UNIX, Windows, etc.) into one user-friendly environment. 
  • Wireless Technology – to accommodate faster and more secure wireless technologies – ones that enterprises will adopt – and ones that will require heavy IT support.
  • Remote and Mobile User Support – to support the trend of more and more employees working off-site.
  • Software as a Service (SaaS) – for the delivery of applications over the Web. 
  • Virtualization – to support companies in their consolidation and virtualization of server networks.
