IT is a career path that requires constant learning and the development of new skills. Whereas in the late 80s, NetWare and IPX/SPX administration were the skills to have, today it’s all about TCP/IP and the Internet. TechRepublic and the eLearning service provider SkillSoft, have developed a list of skills that will be key to career advancement in IT over the next few years. Some of these include:

- Unified Communications – to support of the convergence of different communications technologies such as e-mail, voicemail, text messaging which users are increasingly demanding.
- Hybrid Networks – for the hybridization of various network platforms (Windows, Linux, UNIX, Windows, etc.) into one user-friendly environment.
- Wireless Technology – to accommodate faster and more secure wireless technologies – ones that enterprises will adopt – and ones that will require heavy IT support.
