Gary Hamel, world renowned author, speaker and business thought leader, was one of the keynote speakers that addressed the 300 global business and IT leaders who came together last week for TechColumbus CIOhio 2009. Hamel posed the question of why, with such rapid changes in technology, social structures and cultures, the state of business management has seemingly been stuck in a time warp with minimal changes for decades in how work should get done.
Hamel cited a study his researchers conducted into those companies who, over the years, made the fundamental changes necessary to sustain long-term industry dominance. He said they found consistently that what drove these shifts in dominance were not operational innovations, or technology or product innovations, but management innovation – a fundamental change in how you organize and mobilize people toward productive ends. Hamel challenged the group to seek out and embrace opportunities for such management innovation.
The event featured two additional keynote speakers – Gary McNamara, managing partner of Heidrick & Struggles and Steve Steinour, chairman, president and CEO of Huntington Bancshares, Inc. and Huntington National Bank.
This was the 9th annual CIOhio, an invitation-only conference for business and IT professionals. The one-day event also included peer networking and afternoon track sessions on key topics of interest to the CIO community.
