TechColumbus Endorses Issue 4 to Keep Columbus Metropolitan Library Strong

October 22, 2010

During its October meeting, the TechColumbus Board of Directors passed a resolution of endorsement for Issue 4. Issue 4 would replace the Columbus Metropolitan Library’s (CML) current 2.2 mills first passed in 1986 adding 0.6 mills to maintain services. It would represent an additional $5.24 per month per $100,000 of home value.

CML has been ranked the #1 Library in the US three times over the last 10 years and in 2010 it was ranked Library of the Year. CML offers many vital services such as books, tools for reference, reading programs for children and families, homework help for students, Internet access for job searchers, help in navigating the Web and other needed services for people of all ages. The majority of CML’s funding comes from local tax support and the state budge. Unfortunately, cuts in state funding may compromise the services offered and the operation of branches in certain communities.

CML has not increased its 2.2 mill levy in 24 years. It is the library's only local tax support — 45 percent of the budget and state funding was cut $8 million. These cuts have put the library in a bind and have affected the services offered to the community.

“Support of the library is critical to the continued mission of building a vibrant economy and community in Central Ohio,” said Ted Ford, president & CEO of TechColumbus. “This valued community asset serves a key role in this mission, and the TechColumbus Board is proud to endorse the efforts to pass Issue 4.”
