Ben Kompa, a junior at Upper Arlington High School, has been named the top student in an annual summer program sponsored by Nationwide Children’s to encourage students who are serious about science and who wish to pursue a degree in medicine or medical research. Each year, Nationwide Children’s selects 20 students to work with researchers in the Research Institute and the Mechanisms of Human Health and Disease Program in a fast-paced, in-depth program. Each year, the program selects the top five students in the program, selecting one for an internship of their choice the following summer.
This summer, Kompa was selected for his research work in cystic fibrosis. Entering his junior year, Kompa has already completed 10 Advanced Placement (AP) classes and is an AP National Scholar.
Rounding out the top five students were Shannon Moyer, Alexis Dunning, Matthew Hadad and Shahana Prakash.
“This year, we had some of the most talented students that I have ever had the pleasure of working with,” said Joe Schultz, course instructor of the Mechanisms of Human Health and Disease Program. “I was so impressed with their eagerness and enthusiasm to learn.”
