The US Department of Labor is partnering with business leaders, elected officials and nonprofits to create, publicize and fill 100,000 jobs for low-income young people ages 16-24. Work experience provides a chance for young people to learn lessons they could never learn inside a classroom. Summer jobs can introduce young people to career pathways and the skills needed to be successful in the workplace. It can inspire them to seek higher education and to stay within the region upon completing that education.
Employers who have participated in summer jobs programs in the past have found a critical pipeline for highly qualified, loyal employees – a “grow your own” strategy for talent development that has proven effective for businesses of all sizes.
