Women Business Innovators Having Significant Impact on Digital Media

December 4, 2009

The Silicon Daily Insider published a list of the 12 Most Powerful Women in Digital Media.  The stories and accomplishments of these business professionals are inspiring and they show that women can have a significant impact in today’s digital world.  The list includes a number of distinguished women including:

  • Marissa Mayer, Google’s vice president of product and user experience who was recently named by Glamour Magazine as one of its “Women of the Year” (the magazine called her “The Visionary”).  “When people think about computer science, they imagine people with pocket protectors and thick glasses who code all night.  I do code all night!  I am the stereotype, but I also break the stereotype,” says Mayer.
  • Susan Lyne, who transitioned from “old media” to new, having led operations at The Village Voice, ABC Entertainment and Martha Stewart Living (among others).  She now is head of Gilt Groupe, a high end e-commerce/destination site that attracts trendy consumers searching for designer deals.  “What has really struck me over the years is the fact that media companies have looked at the Internet as either a distraction, or in some cases a threat, but not as the giant opportunity that it is,” she says.
  • Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, and one of the leading women in Silicon Valley.  Previously she was vice president of international sales and operations for Google where she helped launch the revenue-generating AdWords division.

Nine others are included on the list – some of them household names (Oprah) and others, not so well known (Esther Dyson).  For the complete list of these leaders and their accomplishments click here
