Women's Entrepreneur Event: How Intellectual Property Laws Affect Your Business
This free event, hosted by TechColumbus and the Columbus Chamber of Commerce, will teach you how intellectual property laws can affect your business; provide you with resources to grow your business; and give you the opportunity to network with other entrepreneurs.

Opening Remarks by State Representative Tracy Maxwell Heard (D-26th District) who is in her second term in the Ohio House of Representatives, serving her constituents in east and south Columbus. She developed her business Millennium Solutions, Inc. in 1998, along with a career as a political and public relations consultant. Among her many responsibilities in the Ohio House she serves as president of the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus Foundation, and she is a member of the advisory council for the Women's Legislative Network of the National Conference of State Legislative Network of the National Conference of State Legislators.
Presentation by Diane Burke, Steptoe & Johnson PLLC
Ms. Burke is a registered patent attorney who focuses her practice on counseling and litigation in the area of intellectual property law including patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets and unfair competition. She will discuss the following topics:
- Brief overview of trademarks and copyrights
- Website and advertising literature issues including ownership of material, avoiding infringement of others’ rights and proper use of trademarks
- Important employment agreement provisions
- Importance of maintaining documentation
- Timelines for when action needs to be taken to protect IP rights

Representatives from TechColumbus, the Columbus Chamber’s Diversity Bridge Program, and the Small Business Development Center will be available to share their resources to help build your business opportunities.
